Although permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime, sometimes an extraction is recommended. This is usually because of disease, decay, trauma, fracture, or crowding. If you need an extraction, Dr. Keshkool will first numb the area with freezing medicine to lessen any discomfort. You might feel some pressure as the tooth is removed, but no pain. After the freezing is administered, we will move the tooth from side to side until it is loose and then gently lift it out. Sometimes we will cut the tooth into two or more pieces to remove it safely, especially if it has several roots going in different directions. Dr. Keshkool will advise you of what post-extraction regimen to follow. In most cases, a small amount of bleeding is normal. Your mouth will slowly fill in the bone where the tooth root was through the formation of a blood clot.
For the first few days after a tooth extraction, if you must rinse, rinse your mouth gently. If you experience swelling, apply a cold cloth or an ice bag and call your dentist right away. Ask Dr. Keshkool or any Mirage Dental team member about pain medication. You can brush and floss the other teeth as usual, but do not clean the teeth next to where the tooth was removed.
The most common comment we hear from our patients is: “You are already done?!” It is really that easy! To help ease anxiety and pain, we do have options for sedation
